Local SIM cards could help travellers to save money

Holidaymakers who want to use their mobile phones whilst abroad could benefit from opting for SIM only deals in order to save money and avoid bill shock.

The season is fast approaching where many people will be heading off on their holidays overseas. Over the course of the long summer holiday whilst the kids are off school and college many families will be heading abroad to spend some quality time and enjoy some sunshine and new surroundings.

Many of those that head to sunnier climes will be taking along their mobile phones in order to keep in touch with friends and family, use social networking sites, and more. However, many people may not realise that unless they take the necessary steps beforehand they could end up paying a fortune for their mobile phone use whilst they are on their holidays due to high roaming charges.

One recent report has suggested that one of the most effective ways for travellers to avoid bill shock when it comes to their mobile phones is to opt for a local SIM only deal based on the destination that they are travelling to. Officials suggest opting for a SIM only card that is linked to a domestic network or one that is provided by a local operator in the destination that the traveller is visiting.

Officials have stated that those with unlocked phones can simply pop the local SIM card into the handset to start enjoying savings on their mobile phone usage whilst overseas. However, they also warned that travellers should keep their own SIM card safe, as they are at risk of theft by people that will then use them to run up bills.
